TECHNICAL PRODUCTION AND DESIGN FOR THEATRE
For students age 16 - 21

OSSD is offering a series of specialized courses in theatre design and production. These courses are offered free of charge (pending funding). Interested students should contact the OSSD office for details.
Application deadline is December 17th, 2007

Technical Theatre Basics (DARRYL BENNETT)

The aim of this course is to give young people adequate tools to contribute to a stage crew, with an emphasis on lighting, sound, back stage and safety.  The goal for the graduates of this course is to have the entry-level skills to volunteer or work for venues or companies in the area.

The classes will take place in the Natalie Stern Studio Theatre, a small black box studio theatre in which students get a realistic idea about the kinds of instruments and consoles that they would be working with. The studio has a computerized lighting console, sound system and a variety of lighting instruments, allowing the students to problem solve with numerous approaches. Students will travel to other venues in the city to meet with Technical Directors and Artistic directors.  The purpose of the visits is to see how those venues and companies work, and what the expectations of volunteers and basic crewmembers are.

The final component of the workshop matches students to several OSSD productions, taking place in May. The students will have the opportunity to apprentice on many elements of production, assisting in set construction, hang lights, and sound.  Students will work with the instructor to develop their communication with the production team of the show.

Mondays 6:30 – 8:30
(occasional 3 hour class as needed to visit theatres or do tech on show)
30 hours class time, 20 hours tech time

January 14 – April 28
May rehearsals and tech time as scheduled

Set Design and Scenic Art for the Theatre (NANCY SOLMON)

Students in this class will go through the process of set design from start to finish. Throughout the course participants will be taught design principals and approaches, as well as the language and discussion of design concepts. Students will sit in on rehearsals and production meetings with the directors, choreographers and production managers to design two different musical theatre productions: “Pajama Game” and Guys and Dolls”. These meetings will be followed up with discussion as well as involvement on a practical level, as students work on the actual building of the show.

The course involves both course instruction and hands on experience. Productions are scheduled for May, 2008.

Please contact the school for application information.

Saturdays 3:00pm – 5:00pm
January 12 – April 5, 2008 and
April – May 16 for building and painting of designs

Costume and Prop Design (SARAH FEELY WAGHORN)

This course will allow participants to research costume and prop design for a newly commissioned play. “King of the Children” (working title) is currently in workshop stage, but students are invited to develop design ideas for the piece as it progresses. The play is set in Poland in the 1920’s and '30s. Students will work with the instructor on research and how to create a look for an original piece.

Wednesdays 7:00pm – 9:30pm
January 9 – February 13, 2008

STAGE MANAGEMENT COURSE (KEVIN WAGHORN)

The purpose of the Stage Management Course is to provide students with the theory, practical knowledge and hands-on experience they will need to pursue a career in Stage Management.

Classes will be supplemented by direct practical experience. Depending on ability, each student will be assigned to work as a Stage Manager or Assistant SM on one of the shows that The Ottawa School of Speech & Drama is producing for  May Showcase. The shows range from small experimental works in a black box studio, to a large scale musical theatre production in the 300 seat Alumni Theatre at University of Ottawa.
