ACTING COURSES FOR STUDENTS age 7 – 9, 9 – 11, 12 – 14, 15+
Acting classes at OSSD help to increase self-confidence, physical awareness, spontaneity and literacy. Students learn vocal techniques that help them to articulate thoughts and emotions while working together to create exciting theatre.
TRINITY GUILDHALL ACCREDITATION COURSES:
OSSD is the area representative for Trinity Guildhall, an internationally based accreditation system for drama. Through affiliation with Trinity, students in designated classes have access to a syllabus that is recognized in over 50 countries world-wide. Trinity based courses teach specific drama skills while fostering a love of language. Exams with an accredited examiner from England take place annually in May. Exams are optional.
Get Ready to Act (age 9 – 11, 11 – 13, 13 - 15)
This course is a great introduction to the creative art of acting. The course focuses on understanding the basics of an actor’s “Tool Box”, that is how to work with your body, voice and mind on stage. As individual skills develop, students will work together as an ensemble to create unique characters, scenes and exciting drama. Filled with improvisation and theatre games, these highly creative courses focus on what the group can create together.

ACTING SKILLS (Trinity classes) (age 9 – 11, and 12 – 14)
In the first semester you will focus on developing your ensemble acting skills through improvisation, movement, voice, interpretation and dramatic play. In the second semester there is an emphasis on exploring poetry, prose, monologues and scene work. Students receive specialized training in voice, movement and acting skills. The second semester is longer to all for students to prepare for Trinity Guildhall examinations. Exam fee is not included.
ACTING SKILLS FOR HOMESCHOOLERS (Trinity class) (age 7 – 11)
This course is very flexible in its approach. Through dramatic play, students explore improvisation, movement, voice and role playing. There is an emphasis on exploring poetry and prose, and on enhancing language skills. Age group mixing encourages social development and empathetic thinking. The second semester is longer to allow students the option to prepare for Trinity Guildhall examinations. Exam fee is not included.

PAGE TO STAGE (Trinity class) (age 9 –11, 11-13 years)
How does a play go from the page to the stage? In this course, students explore a variety of scripts, discovering the nuances of character interaction. The first semester focuses on duologues and small scenes. In the second semester, a script will be chosen based on the needs of the students. The play will be performed in May and will also be entered as a group Trinity examination in the spring. No audition is required. Pre-requisite: a previous course at OSSD or equivalent.

SHAKESPEARE IN PERFORMANCE (Trinity course: age 12-17)
The ability to work with Shakespeare is an essential tool for any aspiring actor, writer or creative thinker. In this course students discover a living Shakespeare -- one that is comic, profound and fun! Students build their “muscle” by exploring and working with the language of Shakespeare. The course ends with a workshop production in the spring, as well as a group Shakespeare exam for Trinity Guildhall. Please note: this is a two-semester course. Students wishing to enter in the second semester require permission of instructor.

YOUTH ACTING FOR THE CAMERA (age 15 – 18) NEW!!!

In association with The Screen Training Works, OSSD presents a series of Acting for the Camera courses. The Screen Training Works provides professional training in all areas of film, television and other recorded media. This is a two-semester programme, with courses offered at the Introductory and Intermediate levels. Students wishing to enroll in the second semester (winter) require permission of the instructor.
Youth Acting for the Camera: Level 1
Intended for aspiring or beginning actors with little or no on-camera experience, this course introduces the art, the craft and the business of screen acting. Through a combination of acting exercises, on-camera work, feedback and group discussion, you will learn the fundamentals of preparing for and delivering an on-camera performance.
No previous experience is required.

Youth Acting for the Camera: Level 2
Intended for the more experienced student with some on-camera background, this workshop builds on the foundation laid down at the introductory level. In it, you will hone your skills as a screen actor and prepare to take your performances to a higher level. Through recorded scene work and feedback sessions, you’ll move beyond the fundamentals of on-camera performance and explore the differences between a good and a truly memorable performance.
Permission of the instructor is required.

AUDITION TECHNIQUES (13-14 years)
This course helps you to learn how to choose, prepare and develop monologues for auditions. You’ll learn tips on how to present yourself and what to expect at an audition.
This is an 8 week course, beginning in November. It is open only to students enrolled in courses at OSSD.

ON STAGE (age 14 - 18)
The On Stage course is for young actors who really want to act. In the first semester you will build your skills to develop your “tool box”. Working on physical and vocal expression you’ll explore characters, scenes and improvisations. In the second semester, the class will mix scripts and “devised” (self created) theatre to create a unique production.

OSSD PRODUCTION CLASSES (11 +)
OSSD offers students with previous experience the opportunity to continue to develop specific skills while working toward a final production. The courses begin in September, and productions take place as a part of the school’s Spring Showcase.
Each program has a different focus and helps to develop a specific set of skills. Production classes require a high level of commitment.
Admission is by audition in August.

OSSD PERFORMANCE COMPANY (11 - 14 years)
The OSSD Performance Company focuses on a scripted play, allowing students to develop their acting abilities in the context of specific roles and characterizations. There is a strong focus on working with script as well as training elements of voice, movement, character and dance. The final production will take place in the spring.

YOUNG ACTOR'S COMPANY (13-15 years)
The Young Actors Company is for students with previous experience who really want to stretch their abilities. The focus is on developing a company of actors that is able to work on both scripted and non-scripted material, and to explore the creative ideas that come out of the process of working together. The company creates an original play that incorporates the actors’ own skills and talents. One of our most creative courses, the production is unique and takes place in a non-traditional performance location.

OSSD SENIOR COMPANY (16-19 years)
The Senior Company is a small cast of committed actors who want to experience the process of creating exciting theatre working with a professional director. The emphasis is on working with a strong script, understanding character development, and refining strengths as an actor. It is a year long adventure of theatrical exploration, experimentation and discovery with an opportunity to perform at the Ottawa Fringe Festival in June. For advanced students.
