ACTING SKILLS (7-9, 9–11, 12–14, 14+ years)

In the first semester you will focus on developing your talents in acting through improvisation, movement, voice, interpretation and dramatic play. Students receive specialized training in voice, movement and acting skills. In the second semester there is an emphasis on exploring poetry, prose, monologues and scene work. The second semester is longer to allow for students to prepare for Trinity Guildhall examinations*.

ENSEMBLE ACTING (9-11, 11- 13, 13-16 years)

Ensemble courses focus on what actors can create together. Students in this course use their creative energies to make unique characters, scenes and exciting drama. Filled with improvisation and theatre games, the ensemble course is a great foundation for all of the important drama skills.

SHAKESPEARE IN PERFORMANCE(age 12+)

The ability to work with Shakespeare is an essential tool for any aspiring actor, writer or creative thinker. In this course students discover a living Shakespeare -- one that is comic, profound and fun! Students build their “muscle” by exploring and working with the language of Shakespeare. The course ends with the performance of a workshop presentation in the spring. Students may also work toward a Trinity Guildhall exam in Shakespeare. Please note: exam fees are not included.

SENIOR TRINITY PREPARATION (12+ years)

This course is for students working on advanced level Trinity courses (grade 5 +). It is offered in the second semester as an opportunity to select and develop an exam program. You will have an opportunity to work closely with an instructor to get the most out of your exam preparation. The course is specifically geared to students in production courses.
This course does not cover Musical Theatre exams. For Musical Theatre exam preparation, please refer to Musical Theatre Skills.

PAGE TO STAGE (9- 11, 11-13 years)

How does a play go from the page to the stage? In this course, students explore a variety of scripts, discovering the nuances of character interaction. The first semester focuses on duologues and small scenes. In the second semester, a script will be chosen based on the needs of the students. The play will be performed in May and will also be entered as a group Trinity examination in the spring. No audition is required. Pre-requisite: a previous course at OSSD or equivalent. Group examination fees are included.

PERFORMING WORDS: PLAYWRITING, Level One (13-18 years)

What makes a play a play? How does the playwright create interesting dialogue and characters? If you have a story to tell and want to put your words on stage, this class will get you writing. If you've already tried your hand at playwriting and love the excitement of creating work for the theatre, these classes will help you move on to your next project. Prerequisites: a passion for theatre, a desire to write and a spirit of adventure.

SHOUT OUT! (13-18 years)

This exciting course is the brain child of instructor Natalie Fraser Purdy. Combining theatre and social activism, the course looks at personal histories and heritage. Exploring who you are and how you would want to change the world for the better, the group will create an original play that will perform for area schools. You will gain skills in acting, movement and voice that will strengthen your performances. SHOUT OUT gives you a chance to speak to your peers and elders about what is on your mind.

ACTING SKILLS FOR HOMESCHOOLERS (7–13 years)

This course is very flexible in its approach. Through dramatic play, students explore improvisation, movement, voice and role playing. There is an emphasis on exploring poetry and prose, and on enhancing language skills. Age group mixing encourages social development and empathetic thinking. The second semester is longer to allow students the option to prepare for Trinity Guildhall examinations.

AUDITION TECHNIQUES (13-14 years)

This course helps you to learn how to choose, prepare and develop monologues for auditions. You’ll learn tips on how to present yourself and what to expect at an audition.
This is an 8 week course, beginning in November. It is open only to students enrolled in courses at OSSD.

AUDITION, advanced (16+ years)

Theatre schools are increasingly competitive and hard to get into. How can you make your audition stand out from 600 other people’s audition? OSSD can arrange private and semi-private sessions for you to work with professional actors to learn how to choose audition materials and develop your monologues. Instructors can guide you through the requirements for theatre schools in Canada and abroad as they help you prepare your auditions.

Please note: private classes require a minimum commitment of 4 sessions.

Senior Company Classes

OSSD offers students with previous experience the opportunity to continue to develop specific skills while working toward a final production. The courses begin in September, and productions take place as a part of the school’s May Showcase.
Each program has a different focus and helps to develop a different set of skills. Performance companies require a high level of commitment.
Admission is by audition in August (except for Page to Stage). Please contact the school for details.

 

YOUNG ACTOR'S COMPANY (13+ years)

The Young Actors Company is for students with previous experience who really want to stretch their abilities. The focus is on developing a company of actors that is able to work on both scripted and non-scripted material, and to explore the creative ideas that come out of the process of working together. Under the direction of Kristina Watt, the company will create an original play that incorporates the actors’ own skills and talents. The play will be performed at The Canadian Museum of Nature in the spring.

OSSD PERFORMANCE COMPANY (11 - 15 years)

The OSSD Performance Company focuses on producing a full length, family oriented play. Students strengthen their acting abilities in the context of specific roles and characterizations. There is an emphasis on language and working with script, and a commitment to create a strong piece of theatre. Guest instructors teach elements of voice, movement, clown and dance. The final production takes place in the spring in a local theatre venue.
For the 2008/09 year, the company will be directed by Amanda Lewis and Emmanuelle Zeesman.

OSSD SENIOR COMPANY (15+ years)

The Senior Company is a small cast of committed actors who want to experience the process of creating exciting theatre working with a professional director. The emphasis is on working with a strong script, understanding character development, and refining strengths as an actor. It is a year long adventure of theatrical exploration, experimentation and discovery for advanced students.
For the 2008/09 year, the company will be directed by James Richardson.

Entrance is by audition, to be held in August. Please contact the office for details.
