GET INTO THE ACT

Level 1 is a great introduction to lots of new skills. Whatever your age or experience, you’ll be energized as you learn how to play theatre games that will strengthen your powers of concentration and your creativity. You’ll increase your ability to be spontaneous in any situation, and surprise yourself by discovering new facets of yourself. No previous experience is required.

Level 2 is a chance to explore the dynamics of social relationships. You’ll use your voice and physicality to learn about character development. Understanding and working with impulses, you'll discover a whole new level of creative expression.
Level 1 or previous experience is required.

Level 3 (Scenes and Monologues). In level 3 you will work with scripted scenes and monologues to find and explore characters and rhythms in the text. Taking the skills that you have learned in Levels 1 & 2, you'll begin to discover your individual strengths as an actor.
Level 2 or previous experience is required.

GET INTO THE ACT IN THE DAYTIME

You've played a lot of different roles in your life, why not have fun trying some of them out in an acting class? Come out and remember how to play in this fun filled acting class.  You’ll create characters in unique and original scenarios and rediscover parts of yourself you thought you'd lost. Through drama games and exercises you'll strengthen your ability to concentrate and react spontaneously. It's a great way to get moving and laugh with new friends.

PLAYWRIGHT’S WORKSHOP

Writing for the stage is an art in itself and requires attention to the sound of the words, the pauses and dramaturgical elements of staging. In this course writers have the opportunity to hear their words read aloud, and to discuss various aspects of staging. The course explores different approaches to creating scenes, characters and dialogue. A staged reading of scripts will be presented to an invited audience.

MOVE INTO THE ACT

This course  is designed to put you in contact with your physical potential as an actor – how you prepare, how you maintain, and how you access the amazing possibilities that your body can provide, making you an altogether more compelling presence in your theatrical and daily work. The course will help to build your energy level and put you in touch with your creative awareness. No previous experience is required. Come in comfortable clothes, ready to move and respond. SLAM INTO THE ACT

Looking for a powerful form of self expression? Would you like to work on your writing, memorization and performance skills while developing your own style of slam poetry? Slam into the Act will provide you with the opportunity to experience creating a 3 minute long spoken word piece from start to finish. We will also hold a slam at the end of course to show off your piece to an audience of your friends, family and peers.
No experience necessary. An interest in spoken word poetry recommended.

IMPROVISE THE ACT

Level 1 The ability to improvise is a life-skill.  Improvisation can entertain a crowd, it can help you get a date and it can get you through a job interview. This course gets to the heart of improvisation by tapping into the secret powers that everyone possesses but few exploit. No experience necessary.  Be ready to play. Semesters 1, 2, & 3 only

Level 2 Using the "yes... and...” principle, we will explore the who, what, and where of improvised scenes.
From scene starters to full length scenes, this course works on developing spontaneous characters, scene environments and mimed objects. Semesters 1, 2 & 3 only

Level 3 (Performance Improv) Using Improv level 2 as a base, the course studies and puts into practice the complex balance of improvised scenes with improv games. You will work with games from Ottawa's "The iNSTiTUTiON" comedy club and T.V's "Whose Line Is It, Anyway", filling them with real characters in real situations. This workshop will also help you to find the balance between improv work and improv play.
Semester 2 & 3 only. Improv 2 a pre-requisite.

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

OSSD’s courses in Acting for the Camera focus on you, the actor. The courses are taught from the perspective of the actor’s truth, within the context of working with a specialized medium. It is recommended that students have some experience with basic acting techniques before attempting camera work.

Level 1: Acting for camera is very different to acting on stage. In this course you will learn how to adapt your acting skills for film or television. You will discover your “hit” and learn how the camera interacts with you. The course looks at what it is like to be on a set and at the role of the actor. You’ll learn about close-up and wide angle shots and basic terminology.
No previous experience is required, although some acting fundamentals, such as Get into the Act, are suggested.

Level 2:In Acting for the Camera Level 2 you will work on monologues, auditioning techniques and how to develop a character for TV or film. You’ll learn how to listen, and how to react, and what the difference is between the two. The course will also offer an introduction to the business of acting. FINDING YOUR VOICE

Learn how to tap into the power of your voice in a natural, simple and enjoyable way, exploring your voice as a source of personal expression and creativity.
The class will focus on release of sound, breathing, resonance, techniques to improve your speech and diction, and finally - singing with harmonies!

PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

The Pre-Professional Acting Program is a full-time program consisting of 2 yrs, 5 semesters, running from September to May. Twenty hours per week of classes are concentrated into three full days, allowing students to secure outside work to support their studies.

SPECIALIZED WORKSHOPS

OSSD schedules specialized workshops throughout the year, allowing you to explore new ideas and techniques. These workshops feature guest instructors and focus on such topics as Voice Intensive, Audition preparation, Mask and Physical Theatre, Movement, Shakespeare, Improvisation, Stage Combat and the Business of Acting. The timing of the workshops is dependent upon the availability of guest instructors. Check the web site regularly for details.

PRIVATE CLASSES

Instructors at OSSD offer private classes to develop vocal skills or to deal with specific vocal issues. Specialized sessions are available in a variety of training areas such as dialects, body awareness, classical text work (Shakespeare, Moliere etc.) and audition preparation. These sessions are individually tailored to suit your needs and can be flexibly arranged to fit your schedule.
Private classes cost $75.00 per hour with a minimum of a 4 session commitment. Please call the office for details.
