FALL COURSES - 2012
IMPROVISATION (11 - 17 years)
Who, what and where? Those three little words are the building blocks of improv. Study the fundamentals of improvisation through exercises that help to develop strong ensemble and characters. Students will learn about being patient, improving communication skills. This will increase their self-confidence and the process helps them develop a respect for other performers and their creativity. Through improv students also grow to understand the techniques of successful scene work.

SPEECH AND DRAMA (Trinity course) (11 - 13 years)
Develop your acting skills and learn how to make a powerful impact. This is not an old-fashioned elocution lesson. This is about fostering performance, public speaking skills, confidence and creativity. But beyond – Mom and Dad can feel good knowing that kids will also be encouraged to explore literary pieces and prose.
Course Objectives:
- Boost confidence and self esteem
- Develop clarity in speech
- Encourage individuality and creativity
- Develop group dynamics
- Observation & interpersonal relationships
In the first semester, you will focus on developing your acting skills through improvisation, movement, voice, interpretation and dramatic play.
In the second semester. there is an emphasis on exploring poetry, prose, monologues and scene work. The second semester is longer to all for students to prepare for Trinity Guildhall examinations.
Exam fee is not included but there are no taxes added to the course fee for students under the age of 15.
The Fall session runs 13 weeks.
The Winter session runs 16 weeks until May when the Trinity Examinations occur.

PAGE TO STAGE (Trinity course) (11 - 13 years)
How does a play go from the page to the stage? In this course, students explore a variety of scripts, discovering the nuances of character interaction. The first semester focuses on duologues and small scenes. In the second semester, a script will be chosen based on the needs of the students. The play will be performed in May and will also be entered as a group Trinity examination in the spring.

MUSICAL THEATRE (11 - 13 years)
A “Triple Threat” actor can dance, sing and act all at the same time! Get your feet wet and jump right into learning some songs. OSSD's Musical Theatre program helps to develop all of these skills. Students learn how to tell a story through words, movement and song. Training focuses on acting, singing, dancing and working chorally as a group. Specific musicals, or musical theatre themes, are selected based on the needs of the students. Students work toward final workshop presentations.

OSSD Performance Company (11 - 15 years)
The OSSD Performance Company focuses on a scripted play, allowing students to develop their acting abilities in the context of specific roles and characterizations. There is a strong focus on working with script as well as training elements of voice, movement, character and dance. The final production will take place in the spring.

SHAKESPEARE IN PERFROMANCE (Trinity Course) (13 - 17 years)
The ability to work with Shakespeare is an essential tool for any aspiring actor, writer or creative thinker. In this course students discover a living Shakespeare -- one that is comic, profound and fun!
Students build their “muscle” by exploring and working with the language of Shakespeare. The course ends with a workshop production in the spring, as well as a group Shakespeare exam for Trinity Guildhall.

MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE & PRODUCTION (12 - 17 years)
To be a true triple threat – you have to excel at three things. But how to build the skills equally in singing, dancing and acting is the question! And here is your answer: This intensive will give you an hour to work on dancing, an hour to focus on singing and an hour to build the ensemble and strengthen your acting skills.
Your audition in late August or early September is simply to place you in the appropriate skill level to be sure will be working at the same level as your peers. The first semester is spent working your triple threat rotation
After 10 weeks of building your skills and showing your dedication – it will be time to audition for the parts in the production you will build in the second half of the term.
- Final performances for Level 1 will take place in The Studio Theatre.
- Final production for Level 2 will take place at the Gladstone Theatre (Tickets will need to be purchased for the event)

YOUNG ACTOR'S COMPANY (12 - 15 years)
From September to May – embark on an adventure that will see the students create an original piece of theatre - under the guidance and direction of senior instructor and professional actor, Kristina Watt. This company creates, collectively, a piece of devised theatre that incorporates the actors' own skills and talents. The students become creators, writers and performers. This is the chance to do it all, and to stretch yourskills in the most cutting-edge genre of theatre!
The theme will be inspired by the environment and we anticipate the work will beperformed at next year's Ottawa International Children's Festival – as a co-production of 100 Watt Productions

AUDITION TECHNIQUES (13 - 14 years)
This course helps you to learn how to choose, prepare and develop monologues for auditions. You'll learn tips on how to present yourself and what to expect at an audition. This is an 8 week course, beginning in November and it runs until Jannuary. It is open only to students enrolled in courses at OSSD.
ACTOR'S ATELIER (14 years+)
The objective of the Atelier is to work with a group of young actors who are committed to maturing their craft and developing their confidence. Taught by the Ottawa Theatre School’s senior faculty member and Rideau Award winning actor Andy Massingham – this course will give a strong emphasis on:
- Character exploration and development
- Strengthening the actor's voice
- The importance of movement and body language
- Examining a play's structure and breaking it down to scene work
- Respect for both the individual and ensemble
- Actor professionalism
In the first semester, the Actors' Atelier will focus on selected
works by Tennessee Williams, the second on selected works by Judith
Thompson.For advanced students. An informal presentation of their work will be presented at the conclusion of each semester.

Performing Words: Playwrighting for Youth (12+ years)
Working with the director of the New Ottawa Repertory Theatre - our playwriting for youth will help get your work in progress on its feet. How to craft exciting dialogue? How do you develop appealing and interesting characters? What makes a play a play? Classes run for 6 weeks beginning on November 8th. Instructor Paul Dervis always ends the course by bringing professional actors in to read your work. See your work come to life!
